5 Uses For Baking Soda by Rachel Sanfordlyn Shreckengast

Five Uses For Baking Soda

1. Keep a box by your stove in order to put out grease fires. If you’d prefer less of a mess when putting out your grease fires, simply store your baking soda in a recycled dishwashing liquid container. This will also allow you more control over where the baking soda lands as you won’t be dumping a huge glob in one spot. Finally, it will allow you to use less baking soda overall.

2. Baking soda can be turned into baking powder if you have a recipe but are out of baking powder. In order to make the equivalent of one teaspoon of baking powder, simply combine 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar. If you would like to make greater amounts, simply remember that it is two parts of cream of tartar to one part of baking soda.

3. Baking soda can be used in many ways to help you keep your home clean and fresh. It can be used for everything from cleaning toilets, polishing silver, freshening carpets and whitening laundry. For some recipes to help you accomplish these tasks, please visit my article that helps you keep your home clean & fresh with baking soda.

4. You can use baking soda in place of toothpaste. Baking soda will keep your mouth fresh, but it also has whitening properties to keep your teeth whiter (add hydrogen peroxide to the mix if you want more whitening power). Simply make a paste of baking soda and water and brush as normal. Many people hate the taste of this mixture. In order to make it more palatable, you can also add a very small amount of regular toothpaste until you get used to the taste.

5. You can use baking soda to pre-treat laundry stains. Simply make a thick paste out of baking soda and water and rub on clothing stains. Launder items as normal. This mixture works well on a number of stains, but you may need two or more applications on other stains. One stain that this works wonderfully on is perspiration stains. The few stains that baking soda doesn’t work on may need a different type of treatment. Always check to insure that the stain came out before you toss an item in a dryer as drying clothing with a dryer will set most stains and make them more difficult to remove.
