Do It Yourself Sewing Links and Resources by Rachel Sanfordlyn Shreckengast

Do It Yourself Sewing Links and Resources

Crafster.org - Great clothing section, which includes a section for reconstructed clothing (also called altered clothing and sometimes deconstructed clothing) as well as tons of useful information if you are willing to wade through it all. Link is direct to the forums. They also have a blog, classifieds and picture hosting sections.

FreeApplique.com - Free applique patterns to dress up your sewing projects. Applique can be done without a fancy machine (as can embroidery, though you have to do it by hand) so it’s an easy way to dress up clothing or home décor projects.

Get Creative - A huge list of techniques, free sewing projects, fashion and wardrobe seminars and tips. Most of the projects are home décor, but there are also some clothing and accessory projects. Other than their sewing section, they also have sections on quilting, needlework and wearable art. A pretty extensive amount of information.

JoAnn Fabrics - Includes four categories of free projects; Crafts, Fabric, Décor and Floral crafts. DIY Sewing crafts can be found in the fabric section under Sewing, Quilting and Holiday sections, and under the décor section focusing on Home Accents and Holidays.

Nancy’s Notions - Quite a few projects in various categories. The hints section is particularly useful, and I highly recommend the needle chart to figure out which needle size/type you need for specific purposes.

OhMyStars Craft - Includes a section on T-shirt surgery with basic ideas great for those new to sewing. They also have tutorials for skirts, dresses and other crafts and a tips section.

SavvySeams.com - Free patterns for a jeans skirt, waistband tutorial, headband, pins, bags and more. They also have a section on sewing for the home and a section of various techniques, including an interesting smocking technique that is called lattice, North American or Canadian smocking.

Sewing.org - A variety of free sewing projects, in a variety of sections. Includes sections such as Babies & Toddlers, Bridal Sewing, Charitable Sewing, Fashion Sewing, Fun Projects and Holiday Sewing. They also have Teen Projects and a Learn to Sew Section, amongst others.

Sewing Projects at About.com - A variety of sewing projects brought to you by About.com’s Sewing Guide Debbie Colgrove. Debbie also provides a variety of links to other sewing projects. Just make sure your pop-up blocker is on and working well.

Sew What’s New.com - Various free sewing projects, mostly focusing on home décor. Perhaps most importantly, they have free beginner sewing lessons featuring five different free clothing projects that are focus on specific sewing techniques and are extremely useful.

Singer Sewing Projects - Scroll down for various projects, most of which focus on home décor. Some of the projects require specific patterns or sewing accessories, but there’s a number of sewing projects that require neither. The other section to check out is the sewing resources section, which includes information such as the basics of sewing machine operation.

Threads Magazine - - Includes article sections on Sewing Basics, Garment Construction, Design, Fabric, Fitting, Embellishments, Embroidery, Tools & Supplies, Home Decoration and Quilting.

White Sewing Projects - Various sewing projects including a good mix of home décor projects, gift projects and clothing projects. Most of the projects are doable without specific accessories. PDF format instructions for the projects. I’ve made the triangle headscarf numerous times for my girls.
